Charles Prendergast ( 1863-1948)
Boston, New York, Pennsylvania Framemaker
Charles Prendergast became a framemaker with the incouragement of
friend, Hermann Dudley Murphy in 1895. He drew alot of his inspiration for design
from his travels to Italy in 1898. This frame shows that influence with its use of
both white and gold leaf , featuring beautiful sgraffito in the corners. He provided
a number of frames for the 1913, Armory Show in New York. It was there Dr. Albert C. Barnes
(Pennsylvania Art Collector) brought his work to the Pennsylvania area, were it had
a great influence on the Bucks County Framemakers.
Frame is wide, with antique gold leaf, sgraffito corners, white gold with
antique wash at center points.
